There's turmoil in the South American country of Bolivia tonight. This is after president Evo Morales was pushed out of office in what he says was a coup. Morales has taken up exile in Mexico while violent clashes continue in the streets between his supporters and the security forces.
Morales's sudden, enforced departure created a power vacuum and today, the ongoing political crisis took a dramatic turn when - according to the New York Times - a leading lawmaker stepped forward and claimed the presidency.
Today, the OAS Permanent Council held a special meeting to consider the situation in Bolivia.
Caribbean nations presented a joint statement read by St. Lucia - and Belize's Permanent Representative to the OAS Daniel Gutierrez cautioned against any change of government with a hint of military involvement:
Bolivia has been mired in protests since an Oct. 20 election which ended in a contested result. President Evo Morales was seeking a fourth term, after a controversial move by the constitutional court to scrap presidential term limits.
