Corozal Student Dies From Dengue
posted (November 13, 2019)
A 21 year old student from Corozal reportedly died from Dengue on Sunday morning.

Ruggeri Tzul was a Corozal Junior College student. Two days prior to his death a private clinic did a blood test which confirmed a positive diagnosis of Dengue.

He may be the 5th person to die from Dengue in Belize so far this year. CTV-3 news spoke to Tzul's father about the dramatic chain of events that saw his son quickly sicken and die. Here's his interview, translated from Spanish:

Reynaldo Tzul, Father of the deceased
"I took him and they admitted him they put in an IV so I went to look for the exam around 10:00 in the morning and it showed that his platelets were very low. So I called my daughter to tell her about how many he had because she's a doctor and she told me to bring him immediately because it was too low. So I took him and it was as low as it could be. So a little while later she called me to say that she had spoken with an internalist from KHMH and the internalist told her that it was already in a critical state. And that she should make us transmit him directly to Belize."

"So I talked to the doctor and she said that they were in the process of deciding to send him to Orange Walk or deciding what to do. So then I told her what state my son was in, that I had already spoken to my daughter who had spoken to the internalist."

"And so that doctor accepted to send him to Belize and when he arrived there they attended to him immediately. They did a transfusion of platelets and plasma and everything but it was already very late.It looks like he had internal bleeding and after the transfusion he recovered a bit. But by the morning he got diarrhea and entered into a more critical state. And then by morning they had to intubate him. They did it but it was already too late to do anything. He went unconscious and then around 9:45 he went into shock and a little while later around 9:52 he died."

In August, PAHO reported that Honduras had recorded 109 dengue deaths this year. Additionally, across Latin America and the Caribbean, 720 have died, according to PAHO.
