Fisherfolk Feisty About Keeping Gillnets
posted (November 13, 2019)
Today protestors assembled in Dangriga's Alejo Beni park to oppose the proposed ban on Gillnets. The group was led by Belize Fishers Cooperative Association who are holding firm with gillnets. They told Cheriss Halsall that getting rid of those nets will take food out of their families' mouths:

As you may have heard a lot of the criticism today was against NGO's like OCEANA who - those fishers feel - are pursuing a big business agenda which disenfranchises the fishers.

They were taking aim mostly at OCEANA, and late this evening, Oceana and The Belize Coalition For Sustainable Fisheries issued a release. It says that they have committed over two million dollars to the Government of Belize to assist Belizean fishers to transition away from gillnet use in Belize's waters.

Both organizations claim that a ban on gillnets will support sustainable fisheries management, support biodiversity, and ensure food security for Belizeans.
