Garifuna Collective Gets First Compton Fairweather Award
posted (November 14, 2019)

Last week we told you about the passing of noted patriot, and seminal record producer Compton Fairweather.

Today, NICH honored his memory by creating and giving a cash award in his name.  It is ten thousand dollars for an outstanding music contribution that gains international recognition for Belize.

Today, Belize’s leading record label, Stonetree Records and the Garifuna collective was the first recipient of that.  IT is timely, since, the Collective’s new record “Abanâ€￾ reached the #1 spot on the transglobal world much charts, just as they wrapped up the 2019 of their world tour - which has taken them to Europe, north and South America, even Australia.

Today, they received the award at a ceremony at the Bliss Centre - but the bandleader says the connection all started at Puntafest:

As you heard Ovando say, these funds go directly to their 2020 tour, when the Collective is trying to make its first stop in Africa.
