posted (November 27, 2019)
In June, we told you about unemployment figures which dropped to an all time low - 7.6%. That was for the labour force survey conducted in April.

Well, the news tonight is that the September survey has now been completed, and unemployment is back to double digits.

The findings of the September survey - where unemployment is always higher because it's the tourist off season were released this morning by the Statistical Institute of Belize:

Wendy Benavides, Statistician II, S.I.B.
"The national under unemployment rates stood at 10.4% in September 2019. Since April 2019, the level of unemployment increased in all districts except Cayo and Toledo Districts where most gains in employment were seen in wholesale and retail trade and agricultural activities. Although there was an influx of new jobs there were many persons joining the labor force and not finding jobs. Belize was the district with the highest level of Unemployment at 12.5% with a share of 40% of all unemployed persons. Orange Walk had the second largest levels of unemployment at 11.6%. The district with the lowest levels of unemployment was Toledo at 5.4% decreasing from 6% in April 2019."

Females between the ages of 14 and 24 had the highest rate of unemployment.
