Police Continue to Look For Mapp Caye Missing Men
posted (November 29, 2019)
Mapp Caye: it seems like it has become one of the most famous Cayes in Belize but unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons. Since January, 10 men and a boy have disappeared after going out to the Caye - 6 of them have turned up dead - while the rest are presumed or feared dead. Now the Caye may not be as mystifying as the Bermuda Triangle but it certainly raises serious concerns for those who go fishing in the area.

And there are legitimate concerns for the most recent case: 3 men who went fishing at Mapp Caye one week ago and disappeared. They are 22 year old Sheldon Gibson, 21 year old Elijah Usher, and 14 year old Kevin Roches. Today Commissioner Williams says the police and coast guard are still searching for them:

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Well you know policing the seas isn't the police responsibility, it is that of the coast guard. I did have a discussion yesterday with the new commander of coast guard Mr. Bennett and he has assured me that is now part of their operational plan not to put a base but to have more frequent patrols in the area and I know for a fact that is already being done but from a police standup it is an area of concern for us indeed. We first had the incident with Mr. Neal, then the 5, then now 3 went missing, we still don't know what happened to the 3 but while we are optimistic that they may still be alive, we still have to be cautious that that might not be the case and so we will continue to see what we can do in tangent with coast guard with a view to continue to conduct regular searches in the area to come across those who are missing at this time."
