New Traffic Lights for Busy Intersection
posted (December 5, 2019)

Today’s press powwow with the Mayor happened at an opening ceremony for a set of newly installed traffic lights at the corner of Neal Penn Road and the Central American Boulevard.

It’s one of the cities busiest - and most dangerous intersections,.  Now, the council hopes the lights will establish some order for both drivers and pedestrians.

With some help from the Taiwanese Embassy in Belize, the lights - with pedestrian signals are now fully functional.

Here’s what the Mayor had to say about this important development for this part of the City:

Bernard Wagner - Mayor, Belize City Council
“This is a modern state-of-the-art type of traffic lights. As you can see here, we have 8 traffic lights, and 6 pedestrian lights, which really adds value to people’s safety, and residence safety in this area. I grew up in this area, and it has grown tremendously. One time, we used to be able to walk across the streets, but now, with the development, you have to continue to grow with development, and ensure that you put in the necessary systems in place to ensure safety and the quality of life for our residents. The value is in the 6-figure range obviously, and we were able to achieve this with assistance from our friends from Taiwan.â€￾

H.E. Remus Li-Kuo Chen  - Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize
“So, when Mayor Wagner and his team in the City Council shared with us this very important project, and his view of enhancing the pedestrian safety measures, we had no hesitation at all to support this great initiative.

Allan Pollard Jr. - City Councillor, Traffic
“Our resident’s safety is our number 1 priority, and there is no greater feeling than delivering on those promises. This is system will surely eradicate the various traffic concerns that have been increasing on the Central American Boulevard. We now can rest assured [that] our people will be safer while traversing this area.â€￾

The Mayor told the gathering today that traffic lights like these will be installed at other important locations within Belize City where the daytime traffic is heaviest. The project is valued at about 110 thousand dollars.
