Special Day for Special Needs Kids
posted (December 5, 2019)

As part of National Disability Week, the activities continued today with a mini Memorial Park concert for kids as well as a march. We stopped by this morning to find out more about the event.

Roxanne Marin - President, BAPDA (Belize Assembly for Persons with Diverse Abilities)
"Today hype day for kids, we always look forward to today because there is music because today we have parade so everyone will have their posters and we have schools definitely Stella Maris is a member of BAPDA, we have BAPDA members, we have the Inspiration Centre with us, we have NARCIE here with us, Wesley College, ACC, Holy Redeemer and Canaan High School so there are different schools we invited this year they are on the route we will be passing. We need able bodied persons as much as we need our population, we may have our limitations, we are able to do certain things but there is like this when activities and movement may be challenging able bodied persons are there to support persons who are unable to move as fast enough like pushing the wheel chair helping persons with  devices as far as it goes the schools are important for us to reach out to because as I said to them they are the future , they will be planning and looking out for persons from our population and remember people disability is not just an accident away, a sickness away, a gunshot away, there may be persons that you have a surgery and you never recover from, there can be many ways how you end up with a disability and so it is important for you to have compassion and empathy towards persons with disabilities because you never know when that day will be your day."

As we told you, the week ends with tomorrow's Special Olympics games at Marion Jones.
