An inmate has apparently committed suicide at the Belize Central Prison. Last night 26 year old Byron Alarcon was found hanging from a prison window by a piece of fabric. 7News has learnt that he was placed alone in a cell at the special care unit at the prison - which is reserved for psychiatric cases. He was supposed to the see the psychiatrist today, but he was found dead at 9:00 last night.
Alarcon had been in jail since June 2018, convicted for burglary, theft and damage to property. He was sent to the special care unit yesterday after he was seen exhibiting unusual behavior. He was not on suicide watch and had no documented history of mental illness.
It is the first suicide in prison since the Kolbe Management took over.
