Belama Burglars Came Across River
posted (December 12, 2019)

So, while the cops are trying to decide if they will bring charges for this morning's fatal accident, they continue to look for suspects for Monday afternoon's aggravated burglary in the Belama Phase 1 area of Belize City.

As we reported, two females, a 22-year-old housekeeper and a 17-year-old minor were at a home on Samuel Haynes Street when armed burglars broke in and tied them up.  They also robbed a male employee on the way out.

What they didn't count on was that a vigilant neighbor was armed, and he opened fire on them as they tried to escape. They fired 2 shots back, dropped a suitcase full of stolen liquor in the process.

Police told us today that they believe the robbers came across the river:

Supt. Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB
"On Monday, the 9th, of December, at about 2:30, police were called to Samuel Haynes Street in the Belama Phase 1 area, where they spoke to a female, who was also in the company of 3 other persons. They reported to the police that whilst they were inside of the house, 2 male persons entered the building. One of them was armed with a firearm, and as a result, all of them were tied up, and taken to a room. Thereafter, the house was ransacked, and stolen was an amount of cash, jewellery, and liquor from the said house. Police, as a result, conducted an investigation, and they search across the river, which leads to the Martins area. They recovered some liquor and other small items that were reported [stolen] in that burglary."

Reporter
"Is it believed that the perpetrators of this crime used the river as a way to transit to where the victims were asleep?"

Supt. Alejandro Cowo
"Yes, we do believe that they used the river to come from the side of the Martin's area into the Belama area, and they went back the same way."

Reporter
"Is there any suggestion that maybe these culprits had prior information that valuables were at this house?"

Supt. Alejandro Cowo
"That is something that we are looking at, information that we had received earlier, and we are working on that likewise."

Reporter
"Were there shots fired, from some vigilant neighbour."

Supt. Alejandro Cowo
"Yes, we were told that whilst the guys were fleeing a person that was in the nearby area fired a shot at them."

Reporter
"In one week's time, there were 2 aggravated burglaries on this same street. Is it believed that these 2 incidents are connected?"

Supt. Alejandro Cowo
"Yes, they occurred on the same Samuel Haynes Street, but at different residents. We believe that it is people from the other side of the river that are targeting these houses."

The robbers threatened one his victims telling her he had killed many times before.
