Corozal Groundbreaking “Complicated”
posted (December 13, 2019)
And while that school groundbreaking went smoothly - not so in Corozal.

A groundbreaking had to be postponed because of a dispute between the Ministry of Education and the BNTU.

It's over the parcel of land in Corozal where the Ministry of Education wants to build a preschool.

The BNTU says not so fast, because Union executives in Corozal expressed that they are in the process of acquiring the land.

But, the Ministry says they have shown neither lease nor title for it.

A press release from the ministry states that on December 3rd, 2019 the Project Execution Unit erected a sign on the land indicating that the site had been secured for the construction of a preschool. Subsequently, the BNTU Corozal Town Branch contacted the Ministry MOEYSC expressing their concern as it relates to the land.. the release adds, quote, "…in a meeting the Corozal Branch President admitted that they did not have a lease or a title for the land but have been paying taxes to the Corozal Town Council and maintaining the land for years."

Further discussions between both sides are expected - and we will keep following it.
