posted (December 17, 2019)
This evening we spoke with the Fire Station Supervisor Kenneth Mortis about the fatal Silk Grass fire. Mortis confirmed the details of the case and also sent a warning for parents who are in the habit of leaving their children home alone.

Voice of: Kenneth Mortis, Fire Station Supervisor
"Dangriga fire department received and responded to a structural fire in Silk Grass Village. The caller did made mention initially that there is a high possibility that an infant might have been trapped in the building. So we responded and on our arrival we found the remains of a wooden structure gutted by fire and we finish extinguish this fire in the hot spots and immediately thereafter and investigation commenced. We gathered information that Miss Lobos left the home to do some errands, leaving 4 of the 3 children alone and their ages are 6, 4, 3 and 1 year old. We can't say for sure how long Miss Lobos took in doing her errands, but we can say that upon her return to her home, that was when she got the news that her house had burnt down and the most devastated news was that one of her 4 children had perished in the blaze."

"It is never a wise idea to leave your children alone unattended especially at the age group. I mean this is the age where kids are very curious and we have received reports that unfortunately the 4 year old was the one who found a match or a lighter and he became curious and created a flicker. The flicker caught the mattress on fire and unfortunately this was the outcome. So we cannot plea enough to grown folks, to parents - you want to leave your house for whatever reason you may want to, try to ensure that these attractions to kids are not within easy grasp."

Mortis also thanked the neighbor who risked her life to save the other 3 children. She also tried to save little Isaias but the fire was out of control.
