The Cops Say Mario Huezo Killed His Parents
posted (December 19, 2019)

Last night, we gave you more insight into  Tuesday morning's stand-off in Independence Village between the cops and 31-year-old Mario Huezo. He was the suspect that Orange Walk police were seeking for the double murders of his parents, 79-year-old Rafael Huezo and 59-year-old Welma Nancy Huezo.

Well tonight, he has gone from being a person of interest to the accused perpetrator. The cops believe that he killed his parents, and they've moved swiftly to charge him with 2 counts of murder. He was arraigned this evening in Orange Walk before Magistrate Patricia Arana.

As we told you, on Monday morning, the bodies of  Rafael and Welma Huezo were found in an advanced state of decomposition inside their home on Stadium Street in Belize City. Someone viciously stabbed both of them multiple times and left them to bleed out in the living room of their home. The house was covered with blood, and police found bloody knives in different rooms.

Mario Huezo, the youngest son of the couple who lived at their house with them, was nowhere to be found when the bodies of his parents were discovered. It was believed that he fled the home in their green Kia Soul SUV, which was missing that day. The cops wanted to question him about their killing, but to do this, they first had to track him down in the Stann Creek District. You'll remember how police intercepted him near the Big Creek Port, and when they finally managed to prevent him from fleeing, they tried to negotiate with him to surrender. That's when he allegedly tried to slit his throat with a sharp object, but quick police action allowed them to subdue and detain him before he could seriously hurt himself.

A press briefing today, police briefly discussed that stand-off and the resulting criminal charges that Huezo now faces. Here's what they told us:

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero - Deputy Head, NCIB
"In reference to the double murder in Orange Walk, police conducted a thorough investigation, thereafter detained Mario Huezo at Independence Village. As a result, police have since arrested and charged Mario Huezo, a 33-year-old Belizean labourer of Orange Walk Town for 2 counts of murder. The investigators conducted an investigation. They got some leads, and they were looking for this particular person in regards to the investigation. He was located down south, and as a result, he was detained, and escorted to Orange Walk, and based on the evidence gathered, he has now been charged for the two counts of murder."

Reporter
"We understand that he was resisting when he was first intercepted."

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero
"Yes, there was an incident that happened when he was detained."

Reporter
"Sir, do investigators know happened to cause a son to kill both of his parents?"

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero
"We are still working on that to determine what actually transpired which led to that double murder."

Since he is facing 2 counts of murder, the presiding magistrate did not take any plea from him, and he also couldn't be granted bail. He has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until February 12th of next year. The Magistrate has also ordered that a psychiatric evaluation be conduct on him to assess his mental health.
