Caye Caulker Without Water Or Electricity
posted (December 30, 2019)
Caye Caulker residents and visitors are taking a lick tonight - they have been without running water for most of the day - and the outage continues at this hour.

BWS says a drive shaft on the village's reverse osmosis plant broke unexpectedly; it had just been replaced on Christmas eve. The previous one lasted 8 years, but BWS says this one was "out of alignment and prone to failure." A replacement is due for shipment out of the U.S. later this week. In the meantime, BWS is improvising with what it calls a customized shaft in an effort to get the plant operational today. The situation became critical today when the 150,000 gallon water storage for the island was depleted. BWS has dispatched 12,000 gallons of water via water trucks on barges to help provide customers on the island with water. Of course, that is no consolation for villagers and visitors, who passed the day without water, and are also reporting isolated power outages at this time.
