Cal Brothers Accused of Chopping Cop
posted (January 3, 2020)
Last night we told you about 33 year old PC Edgar Teul - who was viciously chopped in a New Year's Day neighborhood dispute. The off duty cop's skull was cracked by a machete by a group of men who had. been fighting with his siblings.

Police were in the area and responded immediately; they detained the men on the spot and, today, four of them were arraigned for the attack.

They are brothers 21 year old Abelino Cal 21, and 18 year old Magdalo Cal, who are both charged for attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm, while their older brother, 23 year old Irvin Cal and 21 year old Migdael Gonzalez were both charged with aggravated assault.

Hurl Hamilton is the attorney for the three Cal brothers - and he spoke with PLUS TV outside of Belmopan Magistrate's Court after they were arraigned:

Hurl Hamilton, Attorney-at-law
"Suffice to say that they are saying that they are innocent of whatever charges the police have proffered against them and suffice to say that they acted in self defence, those were my brief instructions."

Reporter
"Sir was there any sort of objection to bail and did you argue against those objections?"

Hurl Hamilton
"Well, the learned magistrate was unable to grant bail in relation to attempt murder. As it relates to the aggravated assault in terms of Irvin Cal, I would assume that the magistrate was of the view that perhaps all of these offences, alleged offences, occurred out of the same alleged set of facts. So, that is why I would assume that is the reason why the magistrate didn't grant bail to all three of them."

They were remanded until March 26th.

Hamilton said he will try and get Supreme Court bail for his clients. PC Teul's family tells us he is conscious, stable and is no longer intubated. They add that he isn't speaking yet, and can't recall anything of the event.
