BEL Brings In Additional Generator To Caye C.
posted (January 6, 2020)
In last week's news before and after New Year's day, we took you to Caye Caulker. Business owners and tourism industry stakeholders were enraged by water and electricity failures during the peak of the holiday high season.

These outages drove tourists away, because they've paid for a vacation in paradise, but instead, got hellish service from the utilities.

On Friday, we showed you how the Tourism Ministry executives, as well as the bosses of the light and water companies, traveled to Caye Caulker to assure them that these outages are being urgently addressed.

Well, Belize Electricity Limited is reporting tonight that part of their short-term plan to reliably provide electricity to the island is already in effect. They have barged in and installed a diesel generating unit - which was last used in Independence village.

A press release from the company says, quote, "…The locally sourced generation unit is now in operation and was successfully connected to the island's power system on Sunday, January 5, 2020. " End quote. Having this additional unite online should mean that island consumers no longer have to be in energy conservation mode.

As for the unit that went down, the company is attempting to repair that and in a few weeks' time, a brand new unit will be shipped to Belize to provide an additional backup capability.

BEL says that it will hold a follow-up meeting with residents of Caye Caulker later this week, to keep them updated on the process of normalizing electricity supply for the island.
