Police Got Busy on the Peninsula
posted (January 6, 2020)
And while the Commissioner was available for comment, we asked him for details about a series of police raids, which were carried out on the Placencia peninsula this weekend. Officers from the Anti-gang Taskforce, the Gang Suppression Unit, and the Special Patrol Unit descended on the villages of Seine Bight and Placencia to search the homes of several young men. That's after this group of men allegedly began threatening police officers from Placencia.

Our reports indicate that as many as 9 men, between the ages of 19 and 46 years, were detained in this round-up. When we asked Williams about this incident, he had only a few brief details to share with us:

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Yes, I deployed members of the anti-gang task force, G.S.U. and S.P.U., to Placencia over the weekend. Yes, we had received information that there was a group of young men who had threatened the police in Placencia and so we went down and those persons have been charged in respect of that matter."

Reporter
"Are you able to share the nature of the conflict?"

Chester Williams
"Like I said, they were behaving boisterous and threatening the police and using a series of insulting words at the police, without incident."

Among the men detained was a well-known Belize City street figure.
