Weed Bust On GP Hwy.
posted (January 6, 2020)
Tonight, Cayo Police are preparing to arraign 3 Belizeans and a Salvadoran for what appears to be a marijuana smuggling operation.

On last Friday afternoon, officers from Belmopan and Roaring Creek had a vehicle checkpoint set up in an area between miles 46 and 47 on the George Price Highway. At around 2:30 p.m., they stopped and searched a blue Toyota Corolla at the checkpoint. Walter Castillo was driving, and in the passenger seats were Victor Yaegue, Santos Castillo, Walter Castillo, and Salvadoran Adan Marroquin. The cops say that they spotted a black school bag on the floor of the vehicle between Marroquin's legs.

When they retrieved the bag, they found 2 parcels inside which contained 1.97 kilos, or 4 pounds of suspected marijuana. Here's what the Head of the National Criminal Investigations Branch had to say about the case at today's press briefing:

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch
"On 3rd January sometime around 2:30pm, Roaring Creek police were on a vehicular check point between miles 46 and 47 on the George Price Highway where they conducted a search on a blue Toyota Corolla car with a Benque Viejo license plate which at the time was being driven at the time by one Walter Castillo, 19 years old. Also present at the time were Santos Castillo, 21 years old; Victor Lluege, 30 years old and Adam Hernandez Marroquin, 31 years old. During the search, police discovered a black bag containing two parcels of suspected cannabis, when weighed amounted to one thousand nine hundred and seventy six grams. So far, police have arrested and charged all four persons for the crime of possession with the intent to supply a controlled drug."

"Do police know where they were heading?"

ACP Joseph Myvett
"They were coming from the West, heading East."

All 4 men will be arraigned for drug trafficking. Marroquin will likely have to face immigration offenses as well because he didn't have the proper travel documents to be in-country.
