Evangelicals Fear Hate Speech
posted (January 7, 2020)
Another topic that the Evangelical Association brought up today was the information they've received that the government is in the process of crafting legislation against hate speech and discrimination.

From these Evangelists' perspective, this is another cause for alarm. According to them, in other countries where this type of legislation was enacted, the term "hate speech" has been used by the LGBT community as means of censuring any sort of disagreeing sentiments against their lifestyle.

Here's how the association's secretary described it this evening:

Pastor Scott Stirm, Vice President, NEAB
"The government is very quietly moving forward with anti-discrimination legislation. We got an email concerning consultation with a consultant from Barbados at the end of November beginning of December right as Christmas celebrations are starting and it was concerning anti-discrimination legislation that is being drafted in Belize. He did not present to us a copy of the legislation, he gave us a copy of a model that they are using, but they informed that this will be going to public consultation in the month of January and then to the House after that. We find this shocking because, again this is giving greenlight for everything that the LGBT have wanted in the country of Belize anti-discrimination and hate speech which means that you will not be able to speak against them. I have friends in Canada that have worked in professional capacities you are not allowed to say anything about homosexuality in the workplace or you will be charged with hate speech. Just recently there was a news story of a church in Toronto that was kicked out of their building by their city because of hate speech and their hate speech was reaching out to homosexuals on the streets by saying God loves you and he wants to save you. That was their hate speech. So we find it very disingenuous that right before Christmas holidays where basically it's impossible to mobilize any type of information campaign. That was the only consultation time for us as the church."
