A Thoroughly Confused Phone Pilferer
posted (January 8, 2020)
A man who stole a cell phone while drunk will have to pay the court more than three times the cost of the phone after he pleaded guilty in court today.

29-year-old Jamie Sheldon Cadle was arraigned late this evening in the Belize City Magistrate's Court on a single charge of theft. Still apparently disoriented from a long night out drinking, Cadle initially pleaded not guilty to theft.

Allegations are that early this morning, at around 12:37 a.m., he stole a Samsung J2 cellphone valued at $220, the property of Julian Sanchez. It was on the rail at Boulevard Plaza on Central American Boulevard.

After some confusion, Cadle pleaded guilty for the stolen cellphone. He told Magistrate Gillett, "I was drunk. The phone was outside on a rail when I passed I saw it and took it."

For his guilty plea, Magistrate Gillett told Cadle,"You have no right to take things not belonging to you. Alcohol is no excuse hence why I will charge you three times the value because you were not to take what did not belong to you."

Magistrate Gillett imposed a non-custodial sentence of a fine of $700 plus a $5.00 cost of court fine to Cadle and ordered him to pay the fine by March 15, 2020 in default, 6 months imprisonment.
