La Zafra In A Time of Climate Change

This year's cane crop season officially began as it does annually with a grand ceremony, which was held this morning BSI/ASR's Tower Hill Factory in Orange Walk.

It is observed to remind the stakeholders of the importance that the sugar industry has to the country's economy. But as viewers know, last year's extended drought has caused the nation's farmers approximately 50 million dollars in losses.

The sugar cane farmers in the north are among the agro producers who are trying to recover, and it is estimated that over 300 thousand tonnes of cane was destroyed by the drought. So, are the farmers able to bounce back from that major financial hit? Our news team traveled to Orange Walk for "La Zafra" and Daniel Ortiz reports:
