DPM Was In Guatemala
posted (January 15, 2020)
And while Cabinet members all had to answer the Prime Minister yesterday about their involvement with Lev Dermen, one minister who didn't was Patrick Faber.

And that's because the Deputy Prime Minister was in Guatemala on official business. He attended the inauguration of Guatemala's newly elected President Alejandro Giammatei.

According to a release, Minister Faber greeted and expressed Belize's best wishes to the new Guatemalan President and members of his new government.

He also met with members of international organizations, heads of state and dignitaries from other countries.

Faber returned to Belize today.

Notably, the ceremony was tainted by long delays blamed on outgoing officials maneuvering to avoid possible legal cases.

Equal Opps Bill, the Other Side Of The Argument

And in our last story for tonight, we take you back to the Public Consultations on the Equal Opportunities Bill, which happened on Monday night in Belmopan.

Last night, we brought you extensive coverage of the sales pitch from the National AIDS Commission about this draft legislation. They assert that if it is passed, the Belizean society will be more fair, and inclusive, and it will protect against 19 forms of discrimination that members of the general public face every day.

The evangelical churches have emerged as the biggest opponents of the bill. The initial response from the toughest conservative critics is that the core of this draft anti-discrimination law is LGBT. They take the view the local gay community are the citizens that this law seeks to empower, and that the National AIDS Commission has only dressed it up with those 18 other forms of discrimination.

During Monday's question and answer session, several of the attendees challenged those points head on, and here's how that conversation went:

The Commission's panel is currently hosting public consultations in Punta Gorda, and initial reports are that crowds of citizens have come out to participate.

And, finally, a correction to a story we ran earlier. Lee Mark Chang contributed three thousand dollars to the reward for fugitive Kenrick Longsworth, not Leslie.
