Chamber Still Waiting For Imer Contracts
posted (January 16, 2020)
In our first segment, we told you about an Auditor General's report showing corruption at the National Sports Council.   Well many have alleged that the awarding of so many civil works contract to Imer Hernandez Development Company is also suspicious.  But, many of the projects have been awarded by multilaterals like the IDB.  Recently, the leader of the opposition went to talk to the IDB to say something has to be wrong if all these contracts have been awarded to a contractor whose road works are consistently sub-standard.  Yesterday, the Prime Minister boasted that they gave Hernandez a clean audit.  He said that in the context of the Chamber of Commerce making a request to see his most recent contracts and not receiving it:

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"Their request for the contracts having to do, that the leader of the opposition mi the rail about in the house, what was it, Caracol and Coastal? I discussed the matter with the minister and we were clear, those things are to be handed over, there is nothing to hide. I am shocked to hear that they have not been handed over and I will, as soon as I leave here, check on that, I can't believe it. By the way, in the same vein, I want to tell you that I have received a copy of a letter sent to Mr. Imer Hernandez by the IDB in respect to that audit that the leader of the opposition insisted be conducted, suggesting that something was wrong. A letter which absolutely clears Imer Hernandez and says think no more of it, this matter is over and done with, you're gone clear."

"Certification by engineers aside, I've never found anybody who has been able to point to one project that has been successfully carried, a project of high standard, a project done by Imer Hernandez."

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow
"We no the get into that kind of argument because I'm telling you, the leader of the opposition just had the IDB audit this man and the man came out smelling like a rose and the IDB infact, the reason why the leader of the opposition complained to the IDB is because Imer had done and is doing work for the IDB, supervised by them. They obviously feel that Imer performs extremely well and that's what they're saying. So I no wa take what you say is some opinion you have from other people and put that above what the professionals at the Inter-American Development Bank says, so. Make we close it off, we agree to disagree."
