New Contractor General Wins Unanimous Senate Support
posted (January 20, 2020)
We caught Peyrefitte after today's Senate Meeting where they debated a number of important bills. But not everything was a debate - at least two items got near unanimous support. One of them was the appointment of Omar Mitchell for the long vacant post of Contractor General. His professional reputation was widely praised, but there were questions about the support he needs:..

Osmany Salas, NGO Senator
"As we already had the opportunity to review this very impressive CV, Mr. Mitchell is obviously highly trained in the area of construction design and is very experienced. I feel confident enough to say that Mr. Mitchell has the expertise and experience and we should give him the opportunity to serve as Contractor General."

Hon. Elena Smith, Labour Senator "Because of credentials that he comes with, we do not expect that he will be left there to fail as such because he does not have the support that he needs. So, our concern is if it is that he needs to have more support and we trust that the government is going to provide the support that he is needed."

Mark Lizarraga, Business Senator
"Knowing him, I have to ask myself if he is really aware of what it is that he is getting into. If he is really aware of what it is that his responsibilities are."

Michael Peyrefiite, UDP Senator
"Mr. President, it is foolishness. Since Mr. Michel, we can all agree, is such a person of integrity and qualification, doesn't it say something about our government? That he is prepared to be the contractor general for this government? Doesn't it tell you that Mr. Michel feels confident that he'll be able to function under this government, given the powers that he has as Contractor General. So, Mr. Michel will come in, he will present a budget to the government, he will tell you the staff he needs, the people he needs to fulfill the functions under the act and then we judge him from there. We are already saying that he will fail. He will fail. Give the man a chance."

Godwin Hulse,.Leader of Govt Business
"If he does not agree with a particular contract, its design or its potential implementation he has to choices. He can either side step his integrity and approve it or he can stand up and say doesn't approve. And if he doesn't approve and he stands on his integrity, then the mud is on government of whom ever is doing the contract's face. I believe he will stand."
