The Magistrate Courts today handed down a one thousand dollar fine to a tourist after he was was caught on Caye Caulker with 1.3 grams of cocaine - less than one tenth of an ounce.
23 year old American archaeologist Alex Shumaker 23 was stopped in the on Crocodile Street during a routine police patrol. A police search turned up the drugs. He was charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply to another, or drug trafficking. Shumaker pleaded guilty to lesser charge of possession and it was accepted as he explained that it was for his own personal use and he had no intention to sell it. Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts Anderson assessed him with the fine. It was Shumaker's first visit to Belize.
