PUP Anxiously Await Judgement
posted (January 23, 2020)

In November, we told you about the lawsuit that the opposition took out against the government of Belize for unlawful spending. The PUP alleged that Prime Minister Barrow, as the Minister of Finance, has engaged in the unlawful spending of 1.3 billion dollars in public funds. As we told you, they claim he failed to get prior parliamentary approval for the spending of all that money.

The case was argued in December and judgment was due this week. But, twice, Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin has had to postpone it due to illness.

The Leader of the Opposition today told the press tight they are eager to get the judgement:

Hon. John Briceno - Leader of the Opposition
"Well we were disappointed this morning to be informed that the Chief Justice informed us that he's not ready to give his judgement today. He then informed our lawyer, that on Monday they will tell us when they will be able to give a judgement, so we just have to wait."

The CJ's sick leave has been extended until Monday.
