Monday Morning Murder In Gang Territory
posted (January 27, 2020)
And the killing continued this morning in Belize City. It happened in the Lake Independence area around 10:00 am, where 27 year old Ronald Michael was out cutting grass for a friend. But, that area is ridden with gang hostilities between rival groups, and Michael may have been strayIng from his turf - and that put him in the line of hostile fire.

Daedra Haylock was on the scene:

Daedra Haylock, Reporting
From the indications of the residents in the area, 2 shots and the morning's routine was interrupted…. Some disturbed as they rested during the morning, others as they relaxed, others as they carrying on their morning's house routine. 27 year old Ronald Joseph Michael is reported to have entered the area to cut the grass of one of their neighbors.

Even with the close nature of the maze of yards and houses that is as much as everyone was able to tell us. While information was sparse incoming as we combed through the onlookers trying the determine relations and who could offer information, the grief was palpable with the screams and cries… a female relative carried off as she could barely withstand her pain. Others begging and angry that the yellow caution tape and police prevented them from advancing to the police vehicle to view their family member.

At the scene, Police was tight lipped…

Police Officer:
"No comments at this moment, mommy. Yes we know that an incident happened but I no have no comments. The investigation was pretty young. The police don't know what actually happened here… we have to sit down and see what we get from the grounds."

The street so named after the Ordonez family, Lorenzo said he was saddened that the assistance of his daughter's friend was the opportunity the gunman needed. The daughter of Lorenzo Ordonez who was home at the time with the rest of her family was a close friend to the deceased. She informs that "Banner" as she knows him was a close friend. He was there to help her… He is your friend tell us a little about him?

Kenisha Orodonez - Friend of Deceased
"Dah mi wah nice person. I no know much bout ah. But all I know is dah ih mi good to me."

Reporter
"Is he normally in this area?"

Kenisha Orodonez -Friend of Deceased
"No."

Reporter
"What made you call him today?"

Kenisha Ordonez - Friend of Deceased
"Because I di build wah house dah back. He tell me sis I wah help you. So I tell he alright then but the area need fuh clean. So he she alright then I wah come help you. He mi supposed to come do it fram Saturday but ih nevah get di ting they fuh come do it so ih come do it today."

For quite a bit of the time, she informs us that she was on the verandah at the rear of her father's house observing him work… and had only just gone inside when she heard the noise. She could not believe she would come out to find him lying there in the freshly cut patch of grass. She believes he had to have been followed.

It is possibly the sounds of the week whacker as he cut the yard for his friend that made him unsuspecting to the danger approaching.

With the scene processed we scoured the area… all that remained were the blood stained grass and a pair of slippers processed by Scenes of Crime but left behind inadvertently in two crisp evidence paper bags. What was the motive for this latest fatal shooting? Was it revenge? Or just a case of what has now become popular street term: shoot on sight?

Reporter
"Sir, we know thats an active gang area and there is turf war back there between PIV and DLC. Might this have been a product of that turf war?"

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero
"Yes we will look at that if it is retaliation for any previous shooting."

Police have no suspects detained at this time.
