MOE & Teachers Clash
posted (January 27, 2020)
There's increasing friction between the Ministry of Education and the Belize National Teachers Union. The teachers are taking a vote on whether they will take industrial action and the Ministry is going on a public relations offensive.

This morning, the ministry sent out a release trying to set the record straight; they say the union is misleading its membership. The Ministry stressed that the Union's current matters of concern are part of an ongoing discussion with the BNTU about a change in the education rules.

The statement says that an S.I. is needed to change those rules and that is only in the draft stage. The press statement stresses that there is no S.I. as yet and that any action in protest of what may be the content of the S.I. would be premature given the ongoing dialogue.

Of course, within hours, the BNTU sent out its own release shredding the one from the government. It calls the Ministry's release disingenuous and says what they got with the ministry was a notification, not a consultation.

The BNTU says it remains steadfast in its conviction not to be disenfranchised and remains ready for action.
