City Plans To Go On Street Repair Campaign
posted (January 30, 2020)

And while that was the number one issue, the mayor also spoke about the condition of the city's streets.  Now, the former council spent tens of millions of dollars on concrete paving these streets - but - in quite a few areas across the city, the concrete is unravelling - and it's not pretty.  Today, the Mayor discussed this civil works calamity and said his council is prioritizing street repair:

Bernard Wagner - Belize City Mayor
"Everywhere in this City those same $40 million that they received in funding, portion government, portion bond, is now tearing apart across this entire city and what you have done, you have set aside our revenue stream, our cash flow for up to 2023. We don't have access to that until 2023. So, the conditions of the streets that you find right now is as a result of that bond that got floated because no thought was put into that bond. I know streets are one of the areas we have to focus on now. Streets, streets, streets. And that is the area we are prioritizing. You can't fix all the streets but those that we can't fix we will still rehabilitate. But the main ones with the chip and seal and the cement we have put out to tender, we have put out for the new bus stop. We have put out the tender for the ring road park. Those are some of the priority areas this council feels that we have to ensure that we realize before this year is completed."
