NUTCB Wants Political Will On UNCAC, or Else
posted (February 3, 2020)

And while that fire is burning on Patrick Faber’s lawn, the labour agitation and disgruntlement also extends to the office of Attorney General Mike Peyrefitte.  Today the NTUCB press conference was about UNCAC - the United Nation Convention Against Corruption - and what the Unions feel is government’s lack of will to implement it.  President of the NTUCB Marvin Mora says there are implications for stringing them along:

Marvin Mora - President NTUCB
"And the implications of a government who has failed to act in the implementation of those recommendations to ensure that the passage of the UNCAC is full and complete in our country. Given the fact that we have not received any information on our official correspondence sent to the IEGs office, we believe that calling this previous conference is of the utmost importance. This should be a serious call. Not only to work as it’s going to the rest of the citizens as to what we intend to do. If the government of the day continues to ignore the calls from the representatives, of the persons who liver, then there is going to have to be some escalation for us to get the attention, we deserve. "

Hubert Enriquez - NTUCB
"Everything was going quite well until last year in February, after which there where no more meetings of the board. And the Sosapatas have been insisting in all the meetings, we wrote that it’s urgent and so, we ask the questions why it seems that there is no partnership anymore and why there is no political will."

Marvin Mora
"If we don’t see anything being done by the government of consequence that would signify to us their willingness to continue with the implementation of the UNCAC, then obviously the NTUCB will be left with absolutely no other request than to escalate this process. The NTUCB is within its own right to determine how and when there will escalate this process."

Attorney General Mike Peyrefitte says government cannot and will not act on anything in the executive summary, because the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime has, quote, “specifically told us wait for the full report before you do anything; the devil could be in the details hold off until you get the full report, so Belize is waiting for the full report.â€￾ End quote.

As you heard, the NUTCB says it will wait until February 20th for an answer for government and then it will plan its next move.
