Andre’s Appeal Pending
posted (February 4, 2020)
We also asked Perera about his client Andre Vega. In July of 2019 Justice Abel ordered the former land minster Gaspar Vega's son to pay the government 400 thousand dollars - that's how much he had been compensated for land he bought in a dubious transaction.

In that case, the Justice Courtney Abel said, quote, "This court has come to the conclusion that Andre Vega has been unduly enriched by receiving the $400,000 from the Government, and that this enrichment was gained at the Government's expense." He ruled that Vega must return the entire sum back to the Government of Belize.

But, Vega hasn't paid. Today, his attorney said he's waiting on the appeal:

Steve Perera, Attorney for Andre Vega
"The case with Andre Vega. I suspect you're speaking about the appeal. We are awaiting the appeal right now. So that's in process. We filed the appeal in respect to that claim and we expect that it should come out any time soon for it to be heard by the court of appeal. Hopefully, it's heard this year. We're hoping that it's heard as soon as possible."

"Is it not that your client refuses to reimburse the money?"

Steve Perera, Attorney for Andre Vega
"I wouldn't say that it's a situation where the client refuses. Where we're at is at the court of appeal. What in most cases occurs that the parties await the outcome of the court of appeal before making any drastic steps in terms of carrying any of the orders requested by the Supreme Court and I do believe that that's what the parties are ultimately waiting for."

No date has been set for the appeal.
