Belize and Cuba, 25 Years of Solidarity
posted (February 4, 2020)
And while Belize and Cuba celebrated their cultural ties, one speech from the exhibitions opening - ceremony highlighted the Cuban influence on humanitarian development in Belize.

As an artists who has exhibited in Cuba many times, Yasser Musa put the 25 years in historical and cultural context:

Yasser Musa, Solidarity Movement
"Tonight I am in a reflective mood. I am thinking about that powerful statement Che Guevara made in defence of Belize's right to self-determination, he spoke about this in 1961 years before we were even a self-governing society. I am thinking about Fidel, the great Cuban Commandant, who was honoured in a bi-partisan moment in our parliament, and who stood up for when we needed Cuba most at the hour of our birth in the late 1970s."

"But perhaps the most important thing is to know that all this comes at a great sacrifice to the Cuban people for they have lived a spirit of distance and resilience while the most powerful empire the planet has ever seen in the history of history has tried for six decades to crush and beat down up to this very minute of my words. I am just a school teacher but I want the youth to know that no other nation has offered so much to our humanitarian development, as Cuba."

The Cuban government has, throughout the years aided Belize with medical scholarships as well as medical brigades that have offered health services to the most remote parts of our country.
