Kingston says Saldivar Received Packs of Cash from Dermen
posted (February 10, 2020)
Less than 24 hours after John Saldivar was elected leader of the UDP, his name was called in a Utah courtroom. Today, in his third day on the witness stand, Jacob Kingston testified that he witnessed Lev Dermen give John Saldivar large amounts of cash in "packs" that totaled $10,000 each.

Kingston added that Dermen kept these packs in a bag and the handoff was made during a meeting at the home of a Turkish business associate who had also been involved in the meetings with Saldivar.

Kingston said he met Saldivar on a trip to Belize with Dermen either in late 2013 or in 2014. He told the court he didn't know "which minister" Salvidar was, and added, quote, "I didn't know what benefit he (Saldivar) was going to get," end quote, from the money or his relationship with Dermen.

But, Dermen and Kingston did get a boat ride with the Belize armed forces - though, which one is unclear. According to Kingston, Saldivar had arranged for Kingston and Dermen to go on a boat ride off the coast of Belize on what he described as vessels from the country's "Navy." As you know, Belize has no Navy. But, while he may have the terms mixed up, there is a photo from this joyride, which was tabled as evidence showing Dermen smiling with with two Belizean military men on a beach, sporting military-style weapons. There were two boats, but Kingston said he could not remember which one he was on.

The importance of this portion of the testimony and the photo - which was later stricken from evidence - is that it is trying to establish what prosecutors suggest was an "umbrella" of protection that Kingston enjoyed - in this case, military muscle provided through his connection to Saldivar.

There was a whole lot more about Belize in this morning's testimony, where the name of a PUP politician was called.

Again, it was Ralph Fonseca. Kingston said in 2013 he wired $742,500 US dollars to Fonseca to purchase a property for a Casino in Placencia. He said, quote, "He was the minister I was working with…He got the license for the casino business." Of course, Fonseca was not a minister in 2013; he was voted out of office in 2008 and retired from electoral politics. It is unclear how Kingston got the impression that he was still a minister in 2013. But, he said that in April of 2013, Kingston and Dermen were looking at property for a casino, which they wanted to name "Lion's Casino." They settled on a property and instructed Kingston to buy it and he wired Fonseca the money.

Kingston added that they stayed at the Placencia Resort on one trip. He said the owner was looking to sell the property and talked to he and Dermen about buying it, but the sale never materialized.

Kingston's testimony continued this afternoon but nothing as significant came out. A travel summary entered as part of the testimony shows that Kingston made five trips to Belize with Dermen. The first was in October of 2012, the last in April 2015, most times for periods up a week or two.

Kingston is expected to continue his testimony at least until Wednesday.
