Double Fatal on Southern Hwy
posted (February 10, 2020)
Two people were killed in a traffic accident on the Southern Highway this weekend.

Sometime early on Saturday, 25-year-old Jose Cal was driving a pickup on the highway with passengers 46-year-old Evelyn Teul, 1-year-old Kylene Cal, 6-year-old Rashal Choco, and 75-year-old Marcus Teul. He also had two passengers in the pan of the pickup truck, who have been identified as 24-year-old Erlina Teul Cal, and 48-year-old Pashal Teul.

This family was heading from their home village of Bella Vista in the direction of Indian Creek Village - when they ran off the road. At this time, police are investigating the possibility that Jose Cal fell asleep at the wheel, and in an area between miles 71 and 72. After that, everything went wrong.

At a press briefing in Belmopan today, police shared a few more details on the incident:

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head NCIB
"On Saturday, sometime shortly after 6 am, police were called to an area on the Southern Highway, between miles 71 and 72, where they observed a green Ford Ranger pickup on its side, on the highway, which seemingly was North bound and they spoke to one Jose Cal who was the driver who was on the scene and he reported to police that himself along with several family members including Pashal Teul, 48 years of a Bella Vista address, along with Erlina Cal, who is the wife of Mr. Cal, were also travelling with him on the pan of the pickup. And somewhere between miles 71 and 72, he lost control of the pickup which caused the vehicle to be tilted on its side and as a result, in the process, those persons in the pan were flung from the vehicle where Pashal Teul apparently died at the scene while Ms. Erlina Cal was transported to the Punta Gorda town community hospital where she died whilst undergoing treatment. Mr. Cal was detained pending this investigation. Statements were recorded and submitted to the office of the DPP for directions and in the process he was served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution pending the outcome of the investigation."
