Brothers Get Off Murder Charge
posted (February 10, 2020)
For over 2 and a half years, 26-year-old Sabelo Marroquin and his brother, 23-year-old Jose Marroquin, have been on remand for the island murder of 25-year-old Scott Charles. But tonight, they are no longer charged with that crime; that's because the DPP's Office has discontinued prosecution against them.

On August 16th, 2017, Charles, a hard-working tour guide was inside his home, located in the Bay Side area of San Pedro Town. 2 gunmen knocked on his door, and when he opened it, they shot him multiple times. Those injuries claimed his life several hours later.

8 days later, police and arrested the Marroquin brothers for Charles' murder. When their case came up before Justice Colin William today, Senior Crown Counsel Shanice Lovell called her main witness to testify against them. This witness gave police a statement and identified both defendants as Charles' killers. But, when that witness took the oath today, he refused to cooperate, and he recanted his written statement. As a result, the senior crown counsel was forced to enter a "nolle pros" against both defendants.

That's the point at which they would have been free to leave the court, but they have since been handed over to the Immigration Department. They are expected to be deported back to Salvador, their country of origin. Both men were represented by attorney Michel Chebat.
