Suspended Sentence For Hospital Bully
posted (February 13, 2020)

35-year-old John Burke has received a suspended sentence of 18 months in a case of dangerous harm.

On August 1, 2016, Burke and another man, Kareem Egan, beat one Mario Zelaya unconscious.

Zelaya was walking in the corridor of the KHMH, heading to the emergency section of the hospital when he was brutally attacked by Burke and Egan.

Zelaya was punched in his head by Burke and when he fell to the floor, he was kicked and stomped by both men until he lost consciousness. He was admitted to ward at KHMH where he was kept in a state of induced coma until he regained consciousness and was able to walk again.

But today Burke’s sentence was suspended after an apology to Zelaya and his family and due to the mitigating factor that he is a single parent to and sole breadwinner for three minors.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict for Eagan, who had also been charged with dangerous harm.
