Two Mur-dur's In 10 Minutes
posted (February 17, 2020)

There were also two murders in the village of Hattieville on Saturday morning - but this one followed a different pattern, where weed vendors, or as they are known, "dur's", are targeted for turf.

And so it was on Saturday, when Two men who worked as handymen-gardeners but moonlighted as weed vendors - were seemingly executed in an organized fashion within 10 minutes of one another. Cherisse Halsall went to Hattieville to speak with the families.

The mayhem started at 9:50. 26-year-old Ronnie Anderson was riding his bike in the new site area when he was shot. We spoke to Anderson's pregnant girlfriend this morning and asked her if she believes Anderson was targeted:

Voice of Ronnie Anderson's Girlfriend
"All kinda thing happen in Hattieville and honestly, everything they blamed him, everything they blamed him for so I think so. Ronnie had just gotten a little job Friday morning. Somebody called him and asked him if he wanted to chop a yard so he said ok and then he left. That day when he got shot he had just come back from sharpening the machete, he ate and was going back to do the job and then he got shot."

Cherisse Halsall
"Maybe, this murder was a distraction for the other murder that happened 10 minutes after?"

Voice of Ronnie Anderson's Girlfriend
"I think so, I think whosoever stayed they must have said the police would be up here so they have they had time to do whatever they wanted down the road, the other murder. The thing about Ronnie, he would sell weed and everyone knew, everyone liked him for it because he tried to give people the best even if they came with fifty cents he would try to give them something. He always tried to make people feel good."

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero - Deputy, NCIB
"On Saturday the 15th of February 2020 around 9:50 AM police visited the Belizean-American New Site Area of Hattieville where they observed Ronnie Anderson, 26 years, with gunshot injuries to the body. He was rushed to the KHMH, where he was announced dead on arrival. Information revealed that he was riding his bicycle in that area at that time, when he was approached by a male person from behind who fired several shots, causing the fatal injuries to him. Several persons are detained at this time for this murder."

But while Police were rushing to Anderson murder scene, another killer had his target in sight. Kenroy Danderson, also known as Cat, was waiting for a bus at the village's Central bus shed. His father may have been the last person to see him alive.

Gerald Danderson - Father of the Deceased
"Coming back from dumping the Garbage I recognized him standing outside the bus shed and then another person was standing underneath the shed so I just passed and I hailed him and I would say about 30 seconds after when I got halfway on the road here coming to my house I heard the gunshot and I cut my radio off to see if I was hearing wrong and after that, I heard more gunshots letting off. So I hurry came and parked my vehicle in here that I ran and went out and when I went out there he was already on the ground gasping for breath. I called out his name loudly to see if he'd even respond but to no avail. It's something that you might be expecting but at the same time when it really happens it really comes knocking on your door but you just have to learn to live with it."

Cherisse Halsall
"Sir do you have any reason to believe that someone was targeting your son?"

Gerald Danderson
"Well I would say yes because recently he had gotten himself involved with somebody there who he went after and that's the reason why I believe somebody had set somebody after him because I mean if you go and attempt to do something to somebody and you hadn't succeeded the only other thing you can think about is retaliation."

Cherisse Halsall
"Why would he be in the open?"

Gerald Danderson
"Well, this is what I talked to him about repeatedly all the time from ever since that thing took place I always tell him Kenroy you can't be out here like that like everything is okay because it's not okay and the sad thing would be that they would set somebody after you that you have no idea who it is and I think that's what happened."

Reporter
"One immediately has to ask, these murders ten minutes apart, both in the light of a small village, are they related?"

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero
"We are not sure if they are related at this time. Our investigation is ongoing at this time, to determine if they are related. "

Reporter
"Persons killed between December and January there in the Hattieville area, are you able to speak to the wider issues, perhaps, that's triggering these kinds of incidents down there?"

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero
"Yes, there is an ongoing rivalry with these persons in Hattieville which resulted in the previous shootings and in one of the shootings on Saturday."

Reporter
"So, what was police response like in the Anderson murder considering the close proximity of the bus stop to the Hattieville police station?"

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero
"After the shooting, the male person ran away across the street. By the time police responded, he had already fled from the area. Some of these shootings take seconds. By the time he fired shots, he ran off and when the police came, he had already left the area. They are known to the police, yes."

Police have detained several suspects in both murder cases and are currently reviewing camera's in the area.
