posted (February 19, 2020)

There are two murders to report tonight - one in the north and the other in the west. We start in the west where a 24 year old was found dead after an evening of partying in "Champon" - the area between Benque Viejo and Melchor.

Robert Nunez was last seen on Sunday, and when he didn't return home that night, his mother reported him missing. He was found dead today. Cherisse Halsall has more:

24 year old San Ignacio Resident Robert Nunez was last seen on Sunday when he left home.

He was in the Champon area between the Belize and Guatemala border later that day. He had been drinking and was seen with two Hispanic males.

Marina Escalera - Mother of Deceased
"And she seh up to 5:00, ih mi see ah and he was kind of nice up and dance and ih mi happy. One spell like he mi the drop but he was by himself but just because you know when you sit down at border at those picnic table and people come around and people will sit-down along with you too right. So he said he was by himself."

Reporter
"So was he at the free zone or Melchor?"

Marina Escalera
"He crossed from Melchor yes.'

Sometime after that, he was killed. He was found here this morning, dumped in a clearing off the old Benque Road, he had been stabbed to the chest, and his neck was also cut.

While family consoled themselves on the roadside, his father, Robert Nunez Sr had the difficult task of identifying the body, which was already decomposing

And police rushed it away to the morgue. Through tears, his mother sought the consolation of friends:

Marina Escalera
"No, they stab ah up, they cut his throat... (crying)"

She says the last time she saw him - everything seemed normal:

Marina Escalera
"I talk to my son Sunday morning."

Reporter
"What was the last words he told you before?"

Marina Escalera
"He said ma, I'm going to front, that was it, nothing else. I see Sunday night come, he no come."

And, she had these words for his killers - who she believes are from Melchor:

Marina Escalera
"God be with them, if they got family, they will get it the same way how they do my pikni."
