Construction Workers Fall From Building
posted (February 19, 2020)

Viewers will remember that in September of last year, 2 construction workers died in the Belize City Civic Center after they fell from a scaffold while doing some works on the Center’s roof. Well, there was another construction accident in Belize City today, but fortunately, neither of the two construction workers who fell lost their lives.

This one happened at the height of the morning rush in the heart of the city.  At 8:05, two men fell from the former Paslow building - which is now being named the Belize Heritage Plaza.

It is uncertain at this time what happened, but these men, identified to us only by their last names, Carrillo and Sanker, had an approximate 14-foot fall off the BUILDING that they were working on. We are told that they were doing some plasterwork on the outside walls of the Plaza.  Eyewitnesses told us they were standing at the edge of the structure when, possibly a strong gust of one knocked one of the workers off balance and - while falling - he grabbed his co worker who also fell.  They fell inside the construction fence unto the hard ground.  They both survived and one was taken away in a police truck, while the other was rushed away in an ambulance.  Pictures were provided by Henry Fingers Mortis.

At this time, the persons in charge of the project are awaiting an official medical report on their condition. It appeared that the men only suffered some bruises and scratches, but one of the workers needed further medical tests to confirm if he suffered any serious internal injuries.

The accident is currently under investigation by several teams, including Social Security and the insurance company. The persons in charge of the Downtown Rejuvenation Project project tell us that they have already spoken to the contractor to reinforce the safety and preventative measures put in place to prevent these types of accidents.
