We Say Crisis, Elodio Says Transition
posted (February 21, 2020)

Indeed, the first two months of 2020 have been rough for the UDP.  And now, the party has made a clumsy U-turn and is heading right back to another national convention.  It's an embarrassing scramble and reversal for the political party that has won five of the  eight general elections since independence.  And now they can't even agree on a leader, after the last one was forced to step down ignominiously after less than 72 hours.

Today, Orange Walk East Representative Elodio Aragon - who opposed Saldivar - and paid the price for it as his Minister of State - tried to put a positive spin on the UDP's thick troubles; he said it's just a transition:..

Hon. Elodio Aragon - UDP Area Rep.
"I don't think the UDP is in a crisis. It is a normal course that the UDP must take; it is in any mass party. There comes a time where a transition must be made in leadership. You all know that the constitution of this country because the Prime Minister cannot serve more than 3 terms. The Prime Minister, Honourable Dean Barrow has now reached to that end of the rope in terms of his service to this country and I must say he has done an excellent job but it is now a time for transition for the UDP and what is happening right now is just a transition phase."

"Sir but that transition is bumpy, is very bumpy and it is playing out in the public."

Hon. Elodio Aragon
"Well I don't see it is as bumpy you know. I'm telling you that there is a transition phase that must be taken place and in any political party. Of course you have people who aspire to be leaders in this great UDP and I feel proud to know that the UDP is looking and having discussions to select the best leader for this country and for the party. The Prime Minister made his promise to the Belizean people, he has kept that promise and people must understand across this country that the difference between the UDP and the PUP is that the UDP acts in the interest of its people and we deal with corruption."
