The Santander Sugar Story
posted (February 26, 2020)
Last night, we showed you the information session that the senior Management of the Santander Sugar Group held with the media. They're trying to be more open with the general public about their 500 million dollar investment in Belize as the second sugar producer in the country.

Their "Zafra" - or the beginning of their sugar cane harvest season - started last week Thursday, February 20th. It is expected to run for 130 days, and it will close sometime in June.

During that time, Santander hopes to grind just over 600 thousand metric tonnes of cane to produce a little over 57 thousand metric tonnes of sugar. The company is hoping to reach the output capacity that is close BSI/ASR's annual numbers but to do this, they need to grow the number of independent cane farmers who are willing to deliver their cane to them.

Yesterday, their Public Relations Manager discussed how they've been trying to convince the independent farmers in the Cayo District to enter commercial arrangements with them:

Santander wants to increase its supply chain by at least 4,000 acres of cane every year to reach that end state of about 1 million tonnes of sugar cane being delivered to their factory.
