PUP Push No Confidence Motion
posted (February 27, 2020)

We’ve told you all about the political flux in the UDP as the ruling party searches for a leader to succeed Dean Barrow and replace the hastily dethroned John Saldivar.  And now the PUP is trying a parliamentary play to capitalise on that inter-party discord.

The opposition yesterday submitted a “no confidenceâ€￾ motion to be tabled at next week Friday’s house meeting.

It asks the House members to consider a while bunch of stuff including the recent Supreme Court judgement which found that the Barrow Administration spent monies from the Consolidated Revenue Fund without prior House approval.

The no confidence motion also points to Lev Dermen and his association with Minister John Saldivar, and to what it calls a “near economic recessionâ€￾ before concluding, gravely,  “BE lT RESOLVED that this House has no confidence in the Government of Belize led by Prime Minister Dean Barrow to continue to manage the affairs of the State of Belize.â€￾

We should note that “no confidence motionsâ€￾ are not uncommon offerings by opposition parties, and their chances of success are usually zero to none, but we’ll see next Friday.  In most cases, opposition motions are defeated on technicalities before they are tabled and are left to “lie on the floorâ€￾ - in parliamentary parlance.
