Cocaine Cargo Carries New Record
posted (February 28, 2020)
At the top of the news, we told you all about the air tragedy in which four soldiers lost their lives. They are pilots: Major Adran Ramirez and Major Radford Baizar along with crew members Corporal Yassir Mendez and Corporal Reinaldo Choco.

Ministry of National security officials say they were providing air support to a ground operation which intercepted a Gulfstream G2 jet with over two tonnes of cocaine.

We have been reporting that it is the biggest drug bust in Belize's history, but that is under some dispute tonight. Initial and unofficial counts of the weight of these 69 bales of cocaine containing 2,054 bricks weigh in at a total of just over 5,300 pounds. Again, that is unofficial.

But, the previous record for a cocaine bust was set in September 2005 when 5,238 pounds were found buried under a house on a small island in the Tobacco Caye Range.

So, both busts - the 2005 one, and yesterday's one are very close in weight. We'll wait for the final tally when the official figure is released for yesterday's drug bust.
