UDP Will Go to Another Convention
posted (March 2, 2020)

And while that was the noise at the National Party Council meeting - the business of the meeting was actually more important.

The UDP is going to another national convention on April 5th, less than two months after its last national convention.  And, all those like Faber and Omar Figueroa who want to vie for the post have until March 26th to submit their names.

We learned more on this from the Chairman:

Hon. Michael Peyrefitte - UDP Chairman
"The national party council meeting was fairly short, as I've indicated before, I didn't even see the need to have one just to set dates but we had one. The constitution of the party says that once we declared that we are in an emergency situation today, then within 35 days or at least 35 days must pass before we have a convention. That puts us at April 5th."

Jules Vasquez
"That meeting finished from around 11, so there was a post NPC meeting of the colleagues I am told, of the 31."

Hon. Michael Peyrefitte
"I don't know where you got that from but I'm the chairman of the party and I’m telling you, what we did was just hang around and have a discussion about the state of the party as colleagues, that was not an official meeting after the NPC."

Jules Vasquez
"So that meeting seemed to have lasted much longer than the NPC. Are you able to say what is the consensus of the colleagues on the way forward?"

Hon. Michael Peyrefitte
"No, there was no consensus in any way, we were just speaking to each other as colleagues and what's best interest for the party going forward."

Jules Vasquez
"Sir is it your expectation based on the conversation within the colleague that there will be a contested convention?"

Hon. Michael Peyrefitte
"No I have no expectation one way or the other, I just wait to see what happens. If one person puts in their name, then we have a consensus. If 2 people put in their names, then we go to a contested convention."
