Stevedores Lightning Strike At Port of Belize
posted (March 2, 2020)

There was a commotion at the Port of Belize this morning, as the stevedores, along with mechanics and engineers spontaneously walked off the job in a bold act of industrial action.

Their union, the Christian's Workers drew the line after it was reported last week that Santander and ASR, intend to consolidate their interests and take raw sugar exporting through the Big Creek Port.

And the Christian's workers Union says this will mean devastating economic losses to one hundred and fifty stevedores. Tensions rose today as union members demanded compensation for, at worst, impending unemployment and, at best, a 40% reduction in their annual earnings.

Union President Mose Hyde told the press exactly what kind of compensation members require:

The CWU says that these actions have been brought about because while they have gotten a sympathetic ear, they have been told there is nothing that can be done to force PBL to act in their interest. The strike continues into tomorrow.
