The El Pilar Mayan Archaeological Site sits at the western edge of the Cayo District, very close to the Belize/Guatemala border.Â
Over the years, we’ve heard from tour guides who’ve raised concerns about the risks that cross-border bandits can pose to them and the tourists in their care. Well, last Friday afternoon, 2 tour guides from the Cayo District and their 2 American guests came face to face with that danger. That's when they were robbed by machete-wielding thieves believed to be Guatemalan nationals.
Here’s what the Head of the National Criminal Investigations Branch told us today about the incident:
The victims told police that the 4 Hispanic men robbed them of about $3,700 in personal items and $250 US dollars in cash.Â
Police say that they will be increasing their presence in the area.
