Capital and Labour Come Out Swinging Against GOB
posted (March 6, 2020)
Capital and Labour have come together to make a decisive statement on the government's state of affairs. A strongly worded release is coming out of a joint meeting today and it outlines what is called a resolution for action.

The release says, quote, "As a result of the appalling circumstances facing our nation, coupled with the Government's flagrant disregard for the Rule of Law, representatives of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Belize Network of NGOs, and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize held the first of a series of joint meetings to… develop strategic actions to address pertinent issues (including): Ensuring the true independence of oversight institutions such as the: o Integrity Commission,

o Office of the Contractor General,
o Office of the Auditor General,
o Public Accounts Committee (PAC),
o Law Enforcement Agencies,
o Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), o Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), and o Electoral management bodies." End quote.

The group says it will quote, "Urgently (utilize) all available means to ensure that campaign finance regulation and political parties' registration legislation are enacted without further delay." End quote.

So what will they do to ensure this? Well, the release makes no commitments other than saying, quote, "the…social partners are and will continue to be resolute in accomplishing these national goals, because only the people will save the people!" End quote.
