Peace Movement Pillories Peyrefitte
posted (March 13, 2020)

In other news related to the Belize Peace Movement, they say that they've been waiting weeks for any kind of response to a letter they sent to the Attorney General's Office. They want to play a part in Belize's implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

They have written to the AG to offer its advice and expertise on the topic, but they say that the Attorney General has ignored them.

Of course, as viewers are aware, the government is already consulting the civil society organizations which make up the social partners. So, does the government have all the help it already needs? That's what we put to Paco Smith this morning, and here are his comments in response:

Paco Smith - Member, Belize Peace Movement
"I really appreciate the opportunity to send a direct reminder that we wrote to him on the 3rd of January requesting that the Belize Peace Movement could play a proactive role with regards to the monitoring and evaluation of the UNCAC process. And to date, unfortunately, they have not even had the courtesy to respond to our request. So, we just like to press once again to let them know that the Belize Peace Movement has the expertise, and we're also more than willing to play a critical role in this much-needed process."

Reporter
"If there is ever a counter position that maybe you have too many hands in the kitchen trying to stir the pot, what's your response to maybe that criticism?"

Paco Smith
"My response to that is that governments are elected to serve the people. We are a civil society organization, and this is our role. And if we're denied our right to play our rightful role in this process, then there is something that's definitely not right."

We were unable to reach the Attorney General for comment.
