Due Process Suspended
posted (March 18, 2020)

Tonight the 83 detainees rounded up by the cops are facing a very long road ahead. The State of emergency allows for a 30 day detention period and during the first seven of those days, there is no requirement that they be charged or even know the reason for their detention. Minister of National Security and Attorney General Micheal Peyrefitte laid out the state of emergency's procedural element.

Hon. Michael Peyrefitte - Minister of National Security
"These people can be detained for up to 30 days. After 7 days, within 7 days they will be told as to the reason for their detention. After 14 days, the public will get a list of those people. After that 30 day period, the government can decide through the national assembly to extent it for up to a year and beyond that if we have to. We are not playing with these people."

As you heard earlier, police plane to roll over the state of emergency past those 30 days.
