COVID-19 Causes No Cross Country
posted (March 18, 2020)

Belize has no confirmed cases of COVID-19 - one of only 30 countries in the world where it has not been confirmed. And to keep infections at a minimum, Cycling Federation of Belize made it official: Belize's biggest sporting event, the Cross Country is postponed.

Their statement notes that they have been in consultation with the Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, and his team, that they've taken note of measures that federation's governing body, Union Cyclist International, has taken. As a result, they have decided to suspend all activities until further notice. Those suspended activities will include the Ernest Meighan Mount Hope Cyclic Classic, the Junior, Women, and Holy Saturday Cross Country Cyclic Classics.

The Federation notes that the Director of Health Services had given them the nod to follow through with the Ernest Meighan Mt. Hope Cycling Classic, which was scheduled for this coming weekend. They have decided to suspend this race as well because they are aware that the cyclists usually use it as a means of measuring their readiness for the Holy Saturday Classic.

Their statement says that there is to be, quote, "no training/riding in groups, no racing and if training/riding... maintain at least six (6) feet from the closest person. We are taking measures within our control and are asking everyone involved in our sport to protect our community so that we can get back to riding and racing with everyone in good health as soon as is possible." End quote.

Of note is that we also went to the Supreme Court today and the Court of Appeal, which is having its March sitting. Both courts were not in operation today, and as far as we are aware, no cases will be heard for the rest of the week.
